We’re starting a WeAreMyCal club at school and we are encouraging anyone who wants to learn more about any profession to call the leading local expert and invite them to come and talk to students during lunch. Alternatively, they can interview experts so we can post the video on our website and share it with other students across the platform.
Our dream is to expand WeAreMyCal so there is a club like this in every school in California. We have a section of the website where anyone interested in opening a club can come and get support, training and help to get started. We want to grow it so we can host leadership conferences to train future leaders. Any industry expert should be able to come and post their videos about their professions as well as internships, jobs, scholarships or grants.
Hockey has been a major part of our lives, We have had the privilege to be able to play competitively across California and developed deep friendships in many different cities. We are using our hockey network to encourage our friends, competitors and teammates to start MyCal at their schools to help them prepare better for their futures and help other kids at their schools.

We want to help make that easier!
We moved to Orange, CA during Covid in 2021. Walking the canyon we neighbors who took the time to tell us all about how they saved Santiago Oakes Canyon behind our house many years ago. They worked on trails and fought developers to make sure it was still here so we could now have an beautiful park where we can hike, explore and bike.
Then we learned about a company with over 100 acres down the road that has literally dumped mountain-sized piles of concrete, garbage and who knows what else. It is all fenced off and essentially a polluted junk yard!
How did this happen?? How could there be two such different outcomes to the land within our neighborhood.
At that time, my mom was helping campaign for Mayor. He got elected by 432 votes so I saw first-hand how important it is to take action at a local level and
That led us to look at City Government… and many other issues that captured our attention…
We wanted to learn what we can do to make sure that OUR generation learns how to look out for the future of OUR community.
Turns out theres a whole lot to know…
We need leadership training!
To learn how it all works so we can do stuff we care about!
We figured that there would be other young people just as passionate about these topics as we are who also want to take action…
So we made a long list of what we wanted to learn and put it together with a training program that worked with a school schedule.
We reached out to some very wise and connected folks in the community and the Chamber of Commerce and this is how WeAreMyCAL got started.
The Chamber is connecting us with the greatest leaders in our community to teach us the roles each has to run our city and make stuff happen. Those leaders are taking the time to teach us.
Special thanks to all who are helping us make this program happen!
We have lots of ideas and energy and dreams. MyCal will help us learn how to help our community!
In the process, we want to help our friends and peers to learn with us.
We got a lot of support from the head of the chamber of commerce and met the chief of police, fire and the newly elected Mayor himself, Dan Slater.
My brother and I started the website and met with a couple administrators at our school. Although they loved our website and loved our program, they recommended that they would really support our initiative and if we tweaked the concept to focus on future careeers…
took a pole with kids at our school and that confirmed it. We got far more support from our peers and far more interest if we shifted the focus… so we took the advice to to heart and redesigned the website and CHANGED OUR FOCUS TO FIT OUR MARKET
Complete shift - =but we went to our local colleges and asked if we could promote their internships, volunteer positions and local events
We got such great responses that we knew we were on the right track
We envision WeAreMyCal.com as being a bridging resource for all highschools and colleges as an “Angie’s List” for jobs and internships so that there is a one-stop shop to make these opportunities accessible to the very best candidates and not just the best connected candidates.
We envision this a a future communication tool between youth and the workforce and you and politics. If we can brand this as a go-to site we can connect our peers across the state and be a powerful communication tool that can be a platform to create change. We could then educate on issues like environmental preservation and education on real politics without the drama that so often is touted int eh media.
My brother and I have a goal to continue this mission in college and grow WeAreMyCal to be the “Linked-In” of our generation.
Goals:

California has to support the development of WeAreMyCal and be a model for better developing students into strong leadership paths at the High School level. We need to find a way to make it mandatory for all high school students. If we do a good job, this could possibly be a tool for all kids across the country.
My brother and I connected with our local Chamber of Commerce last year. We found that it is a national organization connecting professionals with one another within their communities. However, their enrollment is down. Perhaps we could network WeAreMyCal through the Chamber as a way to get industry experts to create content for our website. This would be beneficial because it would better connect them with great talent to hire.
We also connected with some professionals at Anaheim School District who put on the largest college fair for young people. We have also reached out to some of our parents friends who developed apps and took a company public to see if they can help advise us on how to build the technology needed to create our app.
Finally, we would like to get politically connected and meet with the head of the School Board or a politician like Gavin Newsom to see how we can get help from the state directly.
We need a modern, updated way to figure out what we are good at and how to get the education that can make us shine as future leaders.
I got lucky, I found FLI and I know I want to be a businessman. But my brother is good at a lot of stuff. He could be a restaurant owner, filmmaker, lawyer, doctor, businessman, rancher… For smart kids like that, how do they know how to pick a school, pick a degree program, pick a career?

We need a linked-in for kids that is adapted for our needs. I think cool videos and social media posts should be available by every industry under the sun on a singular platform.
This App should do two things: be a definitive resource for learning about all career options with videos by experts and posts internships, scholarships and grants to fund ideas like MyCal.
My brother and I are doubling-down on MyCal. We hope to find an organization to back us that has the funds and connections to support kids leading kids in connecting talent to experts. Genius kids, socially awkward kids, or minorities with great ideas with no one to tell them they are great, can empower themselves to find their inspirations and get the education they need so that people will listen to them when they speak. We just need an easier way so everyone can do it.
